On Friday morning, the Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuela\u2019s opposition leader\u00a0Mar\u00eda Corina Machado, passing over President Donald Trump who has been openly vying for the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee,\u00a0J\u00f8rgen Watne Frydnes, pushed back against suggestions that this year\u2019s Nobel Peace Prize decision was made to spite President\u00a0Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0public campaign for the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frydnes was asked directly just moments after\u00a0he announced<\/a>\u00a0this year\u2019s prize would go to Venezuela\u2019s opposition leader\u00a0Mar\u00eda Corina Machado, whether Trump\u2019s repeated insistence that he \u201cdeserves\u201d the prize had affected deliberations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A reporter in the room asked: \u201cDuring the past months, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize and he\u2019d like to have it. He even said it would be an insult to the United States if he doesn\u2019t get it. What [do you], as chairman of the Nobel Peace Prize committee, think of this? And how has this campaign-like activity by the president and his supporters, domestically and internationally, affected the deliberation and thinking in the committee?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He replied: \u201cIn the long history of the Nobel Peace Prize, I think this committee has seen many types of campaign, media attention. We receive thousands and thousands of letters every year of people wanting to say what, for them, leads to peace. This committee sits in a room filled with the portraits of all laureates and that room is filled with both courage and integrity. So we base only our decision on the work and the will of\u00a0Alfred Nobel.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s supporters had pressed the committee to recognise his 20-point Gaza peace plan and his claimed role in \u201cending seven wars.\u201d But despite a flurry of last-minute lobbying, including from families of Israeli hostages, Trump\u2019s campaign failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the committee also chose a figure who had previously praised the president in a nuance that could blunt some of the political backlash. In past public remarks, Machado thanked Trump for his \u201ccommitment to freedom and democracy in Venezuela.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also\u00a0featured<\/a>\u00a0on this year\u2019s\u00a0TIME<\/em>\u00a0magazine list of the \u201c100 Most Influential People\u201d where Secretary of State\u00a0Marco Rubio\u00a0called her \u201cthe personification of resilience, tenacity, and patriotism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
