The BBC\u2019s version of Trump\u2019s remarks spliced together two separate parts of his speech to make it appear more inflammatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The documentary quoted Trump as saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to walk down to the Capitol, and I\u2019ll be there with you. And we fight. We fight like hell.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in reality, Trump\u2019s words were more measured. He told supporters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to walk down, and I\u2019ll be there with you, we\u2019re going to walk down, we\u2019re going to walk down. Anyone you want, but I think right here, we\u2019re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we\u2019re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we\u2019re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them. Because you\u2019ll never take back our country with weakness.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYou have to show strength, and you have to be strong. We have come to demand that Congress do the right thing and only count the electors who have been lawfully slated, lawfully slated.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump also explicitly called for peaceful protest, adding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until about an hour later in his remarks that Trump said the second part of the BBC\u2019s edited clip:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAnd we fight. We fight like hell. And if you don\u2019t fight like hell, you\u2019re not going to have a country anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BBC Leaders Step Down Amid Backlash<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The controversy was first exposed by The Daily Telegraph, which published an internal BBC memo acknowledging the editing issue. Following the uproar, BBC Director-General Tim Davie and BBC News CEO Deborah Turness both resigned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a message to staff, Turness admitted that \u201cmistakes have been made\u201d but denied claims that the BBC is \u201cinstitutionally biased.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trump\u2019s Legal Response<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s attorney, Alejandro Britt, sent the BBC a legal letter demanding a full apology and retraction. The letter accuses the broadcaster of \u201cdefrauding the public\u201d and misrepresenting Trump\u2019s words to paint him in a negative light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWell, I guess I have to,\u201d Trump told Fox News\u2019s Laura Ingraham on Tuesday, confirming his intent to sue. \u201cWhy not? Because they defrauded the public, and they\u2019ve admitted it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Pattern of Media Accountability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not the first time the President has successfully taken on major media outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, ABC News settled with Trump for $15 million after anchor George Stephanopoulos falsely claimed on-air that Trump was found civilly liable for rape in the E. Jean Carroll case.
