Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) is pressing CBS and its parent company, Paramount, to explain how the network handled edits to a President Trump interview that aired on \u201c60 Minutes\u201d on Nov. 2 \u2014 raising new questions about media transparency, newsroom accountability, and whether political pressure is being applied behind the scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a letter to newly appointed CBS News ombudsperson Ken Weinstein, first shared with The Hill, Raskin accused the network of yielding to what he called the \u201cimproper influence President Donald Trump wielded over CBS News\u2019s editorial decisions\u201d in recent weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cPresident Trump increasingly appears to be exercising direct control over CBS\u2019s editorial decisions, destroying CBS\u2019s \u2018journalistic integrity\u2019 while violating its right to be free from governmental coercion and manipulation,\u201d Raskin wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
At the center of the dispute is CBS\u2019s decision not to include a portion of Trump\u2019s on-camera remarks to journalist Norah O\u2019Donnell in which he referenced a past settlement involving Paramount and his presidential foundation. That omission, Raskin argued, undercuts the network\u2019s responsibility to air relevant context \u2014 especially at a moment when many conservatives have long criticized legacy media for selective editing and narrative framing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the transcript CBS posted online after the broadcast, Trump\u2019s comments appeared, even though they weren\u2019t included during the televised segment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cAnd, actually, \u201960 Minutes\u2019 paid me a lot of money,\u201d Trump said. \u201cAnd you don\u2019t have to put this on, because I don\u2019t want to embarrass you, and I\u2019m sure you\u2019re not \u2026 I think you have a great, new leader, frankly, who\u2019s \u2014 the young woman that\u2019s leading your whole enterprise is a great, from what I know.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Raskin\u2019s complaint comes against the backdrop of a separate editing fight involving CBS and a \u201csimilar interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 election,\u201d which drew heavy criticism from Trump allies and prompted CBS to change its approach. After that blowback, CBS pledged to publish full transcripts of \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interviews with presidents and presidential candidates \u2014 a move some conservatives applauded as a step toward transparency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The letter also points to a major leadership shakeup inside Paramount and CBS. The transcript indicates Trump\u2019s reference to a \u201cnew leader\u201d was aimed at Bari Weiss, described as \u201cthe former New York Times columnist and a controversial figure in media,\u201d who was installed as CBS\u2019s editor in chief under new CEO David Ellison \u2014 son of tech billionaire Larry Ellison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Raskin\u2019s letter further notes broader corporate and regulatory developments surrounding Paramount, including federal approval for its merger with Skydance and reported plans for additional media deals. He also claimed CBS News \u201cis just one victim in President Trump\u2019s systematic campaign of intimidation against media organizations,\u201d and referenced Trump\u2019s reported threats involving the BBC over editing in a Jan. 6 documentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In practical terms, Raskin is asking for internal detail on how CBS handles complaints and how editorial choices get made. He is requesting a written explanation of CBS\u2019s complaint-review standards, an assessment of whether \u201cTrump\u2019s requests to CBS to omit portions of his interview violates CBS News\u2019s editorial independence standards,\u201d and \u201call documents, communications, and editorial guidance provided to \u201860 Minutes\u2019 producers regarding the Trump interview.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his message to Weinstein, Raskin framed the ombudsman\u2019s role as a check on management and outside influence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cMr. Weinstein: news ombudsmen serve as independent advocates for the public, investigating complaints and publicly critiquing their organizations when those organizations fall short,\u201d Raskin wrote. \u201cYou have a duty to defend CBS\u2019s editorial independence, rather than ratify President Trump\u2019s influence over the organization\u2019s coverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
