Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), once among President Donald Trump\u2019s most reliable allies on Capitol Hill, is now openly explaining why that alliance collapsed \u2014 and why she has chosen to retire from Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a wide-ranging New York Times profile published Monday, Greene told reporter Robert Draper that her break with Trump was rooted less in ideology than in conscience, faith, and what she described as a growing discomfort with the political culture she helped sustain during the height of the MAGA movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Greene said she now views her earlier years in Washington as marked by what she called a \u201ctoxic\u201d environment \u2014 one she came to believe conflicted with her Christian faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was na\u00efve,\u201d Greene said, reflecting on her time as a Trump loyalist. \u201cOur side has been trained by Donald Trump to never apologize and to never admit when you\u2019re wrong. You just keep pummeling your enemies, no matter what. And as a Christian, I don\u2019t believe in doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Greene pointed to the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a pivotal moment in her personal reckoning. Watching Kirk\u2019s memorial service, she said she was deeply moved by the grace shown by Kirk\u2019s widow, Erika Kirk \u2014 particularly in contrast to remarks Trump made shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At a public appearance, Trump said that unlike Kirk, he chooses to \u201chate\u201d his political opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt just shows where his heart is,\u201d Greene later texted Draper. \u201cAnd that\u2019s the difference, with her having a sincere Christian faith, and proves that he does not have any faith.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Greene said the moment forced her to confront the confrontational persona she believes Trump normalized \u2014 and that she herself had embraced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfter Charlie died,\u201d she said, \u201cI realized that I\u2019m part of this toxic culture. I really started looking at my faith. I wanted to be more like Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From Greene\u2019s perspective, however, the decisive break with Trump came over her insistence on releasing investigative material related to Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt was Epstein. Epstein was everything,\u201d she told the Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Greene argued that the files symbolized a deeper problem she believes cuts across party lines: elite impunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRich, powerful elites doing horrible things and getting away with it,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd the women are the victims.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her push angered Trump and alienated fellow Republicans, Greene said, leading the president to publicly brand her a \u201ctraitor\u201d \u2014 a label that, she claimed, had real-world consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAm I going to get murdered, or one of my kids, because he\u2019s calling me a traitor?\u201d Greene recalled asking herself after receiving a pipe bomb threat and an anonymous email targeting her son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shortly after these events, Greene announced she would not seek reelection, effectively ending her time in Congress. While critics have framed her departure as ideological abandonment, Greene insists otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEveryone\u2019s like, \u2018She\u2019s changed,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cI haven\u2019t changed my views. But I\u2019ve matured. I\u2019ve developed depth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She described her decision to leave Washington as the result of hard lessons learned \u2014 not a rejection of conservative principles or America First priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019ve learned Washington, and I\u2019ve come to understand the brokenness of the place,\u201d Greene said. \u201cIf none of us is learning lessons here and we can\u2019t evolve and mature with our lessons, then what kind of people are we?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
