Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) is drawing fresh attention\u2014and likely some backlash\u2014after bluntly arguing that his own party lacks clear leadership and is instead being driven by what he called \u201cTrump Derangement Syndrome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Appearing on the All-In Podcast<\/em>, Fetterman was asked a straightforward question by host David Friedberg: \u201cWho do you think leads the Democratic Party today?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fetterman\u2019s response was equally direct: \u201cwe don’t have one,\u201d before adding a sharper critique. He said he believes \u201cTDS\u201d is \u201cthe leader right now,\u201d explaining, \u201cour party is governed by the TDS.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cTDS,\u201d short for \u201cTrump Derangement Syndrome,\u201d is a term popular among Trump allies and critics of the left, used to describe what they see as reflexive or excessive opposition to former President Donald Trump. Fetterman\u2019s willingness to adopt the phrase publicly sets him apart from most Democratic lawmakers, who typically reject the framing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He doubled down on the point later in the interview, reiterating, \u201cYou asked me earlier, what’s the leader of the Democratic Party right now. I would say it’s TDS.\u201d To illustrate his argument, Fetterman added that Trump \u201ccould come out for ice cream and lazy Sundays and now, suddenly, Democrats would hate it. We would wanna vote it down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Pennsylvania senator has increasingly positioned himself as an independent voice within the party, particularly on foreign policy. During the same podcast, he emphasized his support for aggressive U.S. action abroad, specifically referencing Operation Epic Fury, a U.S. strike targeting Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fetterman said that he is \u201cliterally the only Democrat in America, uh, in Congress, that I’ve come across that’s saying, I think it’s a great thing to break and destroy the Iranian regime. I think it’s entirely appropriate to hold them accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n His comments reflect a broader pattern: Fetterman has often broken with progressive Democrats on national security and Middle East policy.
