President Donald Trump revealed in a \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview<\/a> that a prominent Democrat approached him for a hug in the chaotic aftermath of the shooting at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner \u2014 a moment he described as unexpectedly unifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking with CBS\u2019 Norah O\u2019Donnell, Trump said the night took a dramatic turn just as he was preparing to deliver a speech aimed at the press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was going to hit them really hard, with humor,\u201d Trump said, noting the event was ultimately scrapped due to the security scare. \u201cBut I couldn\u2019t do it. I would\u2019ve had to just get up there and say, \u2018I love you all.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Instead, the evening became something far different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere was love in the room. It was amazing. There was love in the room,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the president, even longtime political adversaries softened in the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDemocrats that truly can\u2019t stand me were saying, \u2018Sir, could I just shake your hand?\u2019\u201d Trump said. \u201cI\u2019m leaving, and I\u2019m seeing high-level people, and they\u2019re saying, \u2018Sir, great job.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Then came the moment that stood out most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of them said, \u2018Could I hug you?\u2019\u201d Trump recalled with a laugh. \u201cA big politician on the other side. There was love. It just all came together. It was very amazing to see. It was a very beautiful thing \u2014 at a non-beautiful moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The chaos erupted Saturday night when a suspect, identified as Cole Allen, rushed a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton and opened fire. A Secret Service officer was struck in his bulletproof vest and survived. Allen was quickly apprehended and now faces multiple felony charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Video\u00a0released<\/a>\u00a0late Thursday by U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia\u00a0Jeanine Pirro, shows the 31-year-old suspect pacing a hallway on April 24, before returning the following evening and sprinting through security while heavily armed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
