The attempted shooting at the White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner is rapidly reshaping the debate over President Donald Trump\u2019s long-controversial plan to build a new White House ballroom \u2014 with even some Democrats signaling a shift in tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), who had previously opposed aspects of the project, acknowledged<\/a> Monday that lawmakers may now need to reconsider it \u2014 not as a political issue, but as a security necessity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cDo we need a ballroom? Well, that we can discuss that,\u201d Rosen said in an interview. \u201cThis isn\u2019t about Donald Trump. It is really about safety. It\u2019s really about safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The $400 million, 90,000-square-foot ballroom proposal \u2014 which would replace the demolished East Wing \u2014 has drawn criticism for months over cost, transparency, and historical preservation concerns. But Saturday night\u2019s attack, in which an armed suspect attempted to storm the event before being stopped, has injected new urgency into the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Trump wasted little time connecting the incident to his long-standing push.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want to say this but this is why we have to have all of the attributes of what we\u2019re planning at the White House,\u201d Trump told reporters shortly after the shooting. \u201cIt\u2019s actually a larger room, and it\u2019s much more secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Security concerns take center stage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Trump allies argue the incident underscores a glaring vulnerability: Washington lacks a truly secure venue capable of hosting large gatherings of top officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is now moving quickly to capitalize<\/a> on that argument, pushing legislation that would fund the project and include additional security infrastructure beneath the ballroom, including a Secret Service annex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very difficult to have a bunch of important people in the same place unless it\u2019s really, really secure,\u201d Graham said. \u201cThe times in which we live are unusual\u2026 I\u2019ve never felt the sense of threat that exists today.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Justice Department echoed that urgency in a late-night court filing, arguing that the shooting should end legal delays blocking the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThis Court should never have enjoined this Project, but now, after the Saturday night attempted assassination\u2026 reasonable minds can no longer differ \u2014 The injunction must be dissolved,\u201d the administration wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The DOJ went even further, warning that halting the project \u201cgreatly endangers the lives of all Presidents, current and future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democrats show signs of movement \u2014 with caveats<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While many Democrats remain skeptical, Rosen\u2019s comments suggest cracks in the previously unified opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She emphasized that large events inherently carry risk and that stronger protections may be necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t harden each and every [event],\u201d she said, \u201cbut you want to try to be sure that they\u2019re as safe as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Still, Rosen cautioned that the ballroom alone is not a silver bullet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne ballroom isn\u2019t the answer to this,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also criticized how the project has been handled, particularly the demolition of the East Wing \u2014 which housed the first lady\u2019s office and other staff \u2014 without what she described as proper congressional process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat I object to is it didn\u2019t go through any of those processes before the demolition,\u201d Rosen said. \u201cWhat was lost\u2026 that should have been preserved for history?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other Democrats, including Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), have gone further, openly urging their party to reconsider outright opposition to the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
