Bush\u2019s White House, made the warning Sunday as ads featuring Trump aired ahead of the November midterms. \u201cThis could be an impeachable offense,\u201d Painter <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RWPUSA\/status\/2104316218534408647\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote on X<\/a>, referring to comments he made to <em>The New York Times<\/em>. The White House disputes his description of the ads, calling them public service announcements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The ads behind the fight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One 30-second spot flashes images of Trump while touting tax cuts, manufacturing and law enforcement. It uses audio of the president promising to defeat \u201ccommunism, socialism and Marxism in America,\u201d followed by praise from UFC CEO Dana White. The screen identifies it as \u201cPaid for by the U.S. Government.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/Politics\/trump-administrations-campaign-style-ad-fox-news-taxpayer\/story?id=136723829&amp;utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ABC News reported<\/a> that the spot ran on Fox News and Newsmax in several markets; ad-tracking firm AdImpact estimated the buy at roughly $14,000 as of September 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A separate black-and-white spot features Trump\u2019s 2024 campaign rhetoric about the \u201cdeep state,\u201d \u201cwarmongers\u201d and the news media. <em>The New York Times<\/em> reported that the footage had previously run as a campaign ad. Painter told the Times that using federal funds for the spots could constitute an abuse of power and an impeachable offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dispute centers on whether the ads serve a government purpose or promote a political figure with public money. Painter contends that federal restrictions on government-funded political propaganda apply. His warning is not a legal finding or an announcement of impeachment proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Criticism reaches both parties<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., criticized the spending after being shown one of the ads on CBS\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/john-kennedy-louisiana-republican-face-the-nation-transcript-09-27-2026\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Face the Nation<\/em><\/a> Sunday. He said public officials, including Trump, should not spend public money on ads for themselves. Kennedy acknowledged that the White House sees the spot differently and said he believed there probably was a rule against using public funds for self-promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The watchdog group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizen.org\/news\/taxpayer-funded-trump-ad-violates-the-hatch-act\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Public Citizen filed a complaint<\/a> Friday with the Government Accountability Office and the Office of Special Counsel. It alleged that the ads violate restrictions on government propaganda and political activity, and called for them to be pulled. The complaint states the group\u2019s allegations; it does not establish that a violation occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/releases\/2026\/09\/presidential-public-service-announcements-are-nothing-new\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">White House said Friday<\/a> that Trump is not on the November ballot and that the ads contain no call to vote. It cited government-funded public information campaigns under previous presidents, including messages about Medicare, health insurance enrollment and COVID-19 vaccination.
