Behind closed doors, one of his most prominent Senate candidates reportedly offered a far less encouraging assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican nominee for Senate, told conservative donors and lobbyists that the gathering had hurt his campaign\u2019s numbers, according to an audio recording obtained by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/30\/us\/politics\/ken-paxton-trump-midterm-convention.html?unlocked_article_code=1.FFE.S5tF.RW0dgcGdXDcU&amp;smid=url-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo to be honest with you, the numbers \u2014 when we did that convention \u2014 it dropped our numbers. Everybody\u2019s numbers dropped. Right now, yeah, not good,\u201d Paxton said, according to the newspaper.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remarks put Paxton\u2019s private assessment at odds with Trump\u2019s public claim that the convention helped him. They also come as Republicans pour money into a surprisingly competitive fight to hold a Texas Senate seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Private remarks draw a campaign rebuttal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Times reported that the recording came from a private Washington fundraiser on Sept. 24 attended by roughly a dozen people. An attendee who opposes Paxton\u2019s campaign provided the audio and received anonymity because the remarks were private.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the recording, a questioner asks, \u201cDo you feel like he\u2019s a little bit of a drag?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The newspaper cautioned that the audio is muffled at times and does not clearly establish whom the questioner meant. Paxton\u2019s response, however, specifically addressed the convention and what he described as declining numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three other people with knowledge of the event confirmed Paxton attended, according to the Times. Two remembered the question, and one recalled his response about the convention\u2019s negative consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paxton\u2019s campaign sharply disputed the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nick Maddux, a senior adviser, called it \u201cmore manipulated nonsense from The New York Times to create a story that doesn\u2019t exist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur latest poll from the last week has Ken Paxton leading by three points, and every serious pollster will tell you that our numbers have improved since early September,\u201d Maddux told the newspaper.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that Paxton expects to win and looks forward to \u201cclosing strong alongside President Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trump offered a different assessment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paxton has closely aligned himself with Trump, whose support helped him defeat Sen. John Cornyn in this year\u2019s Republican primary, the Times reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Dallas convention gave Paxton a prominent platform in his home state and opportunities to connect with Republican donors. Trump praised him onstage, even while teasing his appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Afterward, the president offered an assessment that directly contrasted with Paxton\u2019s recorded remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fact that we had such a successful convention really helped Ken Paxton,\u201d Trump said, according to the Times. \u201cHe was a big part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe convention helped Ken Paxton a lot,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether the gathering actually hurt Republican candidates remains unresolved. The Times reported that public surveys of the Texas Senate race did not appear to show a significant convention-related change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A costly fight in Texas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The broader polling picture nevertheless shows why Republicans are concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of Sept. 30, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/senate\/general\/2026\/texas\/paxton-vs-talarico?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RealClearPolling<\/a>\u2019s average put Democratic state Rep. James Talarico ahead of Paxton, 47.6% to 44.7%, a 2.9-point advantage.
