Now, he says he regrets choosing all three of his appointees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a September 28 interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/10\/01\/donald-trump-2026-interview-transcript\/\">Time magazine<\/a>, Trump was asked whether he regretted nominating Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah. Yeah. What can I do? I put them in,\u201d Trump replied. \u201cThey voted against me too often.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The blunt admission follows a string of clashes between the president and the court over his administration\u2019s policies on tariffs, birthright citizenship and mail voting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump appointed Gorsuch in 2017, Kavanaugh in 2018 and Barrett in 2020. Those selections helped establish the court\u2019s 6\u20133 conservative majority \u2014 a transformation he has repeatedly touted as one of his biggest accomplishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the president now says his nominees have fallen short of his expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Very Disappointing\u2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the Time interview, Trump complained that his appointees had received the \u201cposition of a lifetime\u201d but nevertheless frequently ruled against his administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey vote for me too,\u201d he acknowledged.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, Trump contrasted their decisions with those of the court\u2019s three liberal justices, whom he described as more consistent in voting together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Democrats stick like glue \u2014 those three, they virtually never vary,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although he criticized that approach, he added that \u201cthere\u2019s something I admire about it: there\u2019s loyalty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked whether he wanted loyalty from his own nominees, Trump rejected that characterization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, I don\u2019t want loyalty,\u201d he said. \u201cI want good decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His assessment of the justices he selected remained harsh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI put these people in. It is what it is,\u201d Trump told Time. \u201cVery disappointing, very disappointing for the country \u2014 their decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mail Voting Clash Fueled His Anger<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump had already publicly attacked his three appointees in September after the court blocked his administration\u2019s attempt to restrict mail voting ahead of the midterm elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that criticism, he said the justices \u201care not the people I interviewed to serve\u201d and called them \u201cshells of their former selves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court\u2019s order did not disclose a complete vote breakdown, leaving each justice\u2019s position unclear. Kavanaugh wrote a concurring opinion, while Gorsuch and Barrett did not publicly join the dissent from Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump praised Thomas and Alito as \u201clegends both\u201d while directing his frustration at the broader court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tariffs And Citizenship Remain Flashpoints<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The president also singled out rulings involving his tariff policies and effort to narrow birthright citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe tariff decision was disastrous for the country,\u201d Trump<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/10\/01\/donald-trump-2026-interview-transcript\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> told<\/a> Time, calling it \u201can absolute crying shame.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He argued that the court should have protected the substantial revenue collected under his trade policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump also criticized the court\u2019s decision involving his attempt to restrict automatic citizenship for some children born in the United States \u2014 an executive action challenged under the 14th Amendment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate what they did \u2014 not to me, to our country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Court He Once Celebrated<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s frustration marks a striking turn in his public assessment of the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His appointees helped deliver major conservative victories, including overturning <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, expanding Second Amendment protections and restricting the use of race in college admissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for those outcomes, particularly the reversal of <em>Roe<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Supreme Court justices hold lifetime appointments and remain independent of the presidents who nominate them.
