Chris Christie is already taking a blowtorch to Vice President JD Vance\u2019s 2028 ambitions \u2014 while leaving room for a White House comeback of his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christie predicted that Vance\u2019s close association with President Donald Trump could keep him from capturing the next Republican presidential nomination, arguing that GOP voters will be focused on finding a candidate who can win the general election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe is going to reek with the stink of Donald Trump,\u201d Christie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sfm_l2eK8X4&amp;utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> Thursday during an appearance at George Washington University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chris Christie on 2028 Presidential Candidates\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sfm_l2eK8X4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christie argued that Republicans could ultimately decide nominating Vance would make it more likely that a Democrat wins the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The comments represent a sharp challenge to the widespread view that Vance is the early heir apparent to Trump\u2019s political movement. They also put Christie \u2014 one of Trump\u2019s most vocal Republican critics \u2014 back in the middle of the emerging 2028 conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Christie Questions Whether Vance Can Match Trump<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christie\u2019s criticism went beyond policy and political baggage. He also questioned whether Vance possesses the personal appeal that helped Trump reshape the Republican Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJD is not nearly as charming as Trump,\u201d Christie said. \u201cYou say what you want about Trump, but he has charm and he has some charisma, when he decides to use it. I haven\u2019t seen that out of Vance yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the discussion, George Washington University professor Frank Sesno asked whether Vance could create some distance from Trump, much as George H.W. Bush established his own identity after serving as Ronald Reagan\u2019s vice president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christie rejected the comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He argued that Vance would struggle to separate himself from an administration in which he played a central role. Democrats, Christie suggested, could also use Vance\u2019s dramatic evolution on Trump against him: Vance once compared Trump to Adolf Hitler before eventually becoming his running mate and vice president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vance\u2019s supporters would likely offer a very different assessment. Trump has repeatedly discussed Vance as a potential successor, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/chris-christie-thinks-jd-vance-has-too-much-trump-stink-on-him-to-be-the-2028-republican-nominee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mediaite<\/a> reported in August that the president had privately told donors, \u201cAt the end of the day, we need to elect JD.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump has not issued a formal 2028 endorsement, however, and has also spoken favorably about Secretary of State Marco Rubio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rubio Gets Written Off, Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christie was also skeptical that Rubio would enter the 2028 race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former governor described Rubio as politically shrewd and suggested the secretary of state understands that his service in the Trump administration has branded him as a \u201cTrump Republican.\u201d Christie predicted Rubio may wait for a later election rather than battle Vance and other candidates for the nomination in 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That assessment conveniently leaves more room for another contender \u2014 including Christie himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Sesno asked whether he might run, Christie did not close the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m gonna look at it,\u201d Christie said, while cautioning that \u201ca number of things\u201d would need to happen first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Christie Eyes A Third Shot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thursday\u2019s answer was not the first time Christie has hinted at another campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a September appearance at the Granite State Summit on Responsible Gaming in New Hampshire, Christie admitted he was considering a third presidential bid but said he wanted to see how Republicans performed in the midterm elections before deciding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnybody who comes up here and has ever run for president and not won and told you they\u2019re not looking at it again is lying,\u201d Christie said at the event. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He suggested major Republican losses could force the party to reconsider its direction and leadership. Christie also said any campaign would require a credible path to victory \u2014 something that eluded him during his previous runs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christie ended his first presidential campaign after a disappointing finish in the 2016 New Hampshire primary. He endorsed Trump shortly afterward, but the alliance eventually collapsed. Christie returned in 2024 as one of the GOP field\u2019s most aggressive Trump critics before dropping out ahead of the Iowa caucuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sesno reminded Christie that 2028 would mark his third attempt at the presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTrue, just like Reagan,\u201d Christie replied. \u201cHe got elected on the third time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reagan sought the Republican nomination in 1968 and 1976 before winning the White House in 1980.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former New Jersey Gov.
