Katie Hobbs when he pivoted to an unconventional assessment of Musk\u2019s intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFirst of all, she\u2019s a dumb person. You ever see her?\u201d Trump said of Hobbs, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/6152303-trump-mocks-musk-arizona-rally\/?tbref=hp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Hill<\/a>. \u201cI know smart people \u2026 from Elon down to [Hobbs], I figure there\u2019s a big gap.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then came the backhanded compliment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, Elon\u2019s 80 percent super genius, and 20 percent \u2014 he got a little problem, I always tell him,\u201d Trump said, before adding: \u201cNo, he\u2019s a great guy though.\u201d A <a href=\"https:\/\/rollcall.com\/factbase\/trump\/transcript\/donald-trump-speech-midterm-political-rally-bullhead-city-arizona-october-14-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transcript of the October 14 rally<\/a> confirms the exchange.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The remark offered another glimpse into a relationship that has survived a spectacular public breakup \u2014 and a gradual return to political cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From White House Ally To Public Adversary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Musk helped power Trump\u2019s 2024 election effort before becoming a prominent figure in the administration\u2019s Department of Government Efficiency, which pursued cuts to federal spending and staffing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But after leaving his government role in May 2025, the Tesla and SpaceX chief became an outspoken critic of Trump\u2019s sweeping tax-and-spending legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By June, the disagreement had turned into an ugly public feud. Trump threatened to eliminate government contracts and subsidies benefiting Musk\u2019s companies. Musk escalated matters with an unsupported allegation that the administration was withholding Jeffrey Epstein records to protect Trump, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/siladityaray\/2025\/06\/11\/musk-says-he-regrets-his-posts-bashing-trump-last-week-went-too-far\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forbes reported at the time<\/a>. Musk subsequently deleted that post and another endorsing Trump\u2019s impeachment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On June 11, Musk publicly stepped back from some of his attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week,\u201d he wrote on X. \u201cThey went too far.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How They Found Their Way Back<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two shook hands at Charlie Kirk\u2019s September 2025 memorial service in Arizona, a visible step toward repairing their relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reconciliation also involved work behind the scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An August <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/saradorn\/2026\/08\/14\/trump-reportedly-says-his-relationship-with-musk-will-never-be-the-same-after-epic-fallout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forbes report summarizing reporting by The Wall Street Journal<\/a> described efforts by Kirk, Vice President JD Vance, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and others to rebuild the alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By then, Trump and Musk were reportedly speaking roughly once a month. Musk also accompanied the president on his May trip to China, although Trump had privately acknowledged that their relationship would never be quite the same, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Musk Opens His Checkbook Again<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their renewed cooperation now carries major stakes for Republicans defending control of Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/10\/15\/elon-musk-texas-rescue-mission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Axios reported Thursday<\/a> that Musk gave the Senate Leadership Fund $158 million in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That financial support marks a striking turnaround from last year\u2019s threats to challenge the GOP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while Trump\u2019s Arizona remarks show he still has a jab ready for Musk, he made sure to follow it with a friendly qualification: \u201cHe\u2019s a great guy though.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Donald Trump has patched things up with Elon Musk, but that hasn\u2019t stopped him from taking a little dig at his billionaire ally.
