President Donald Trump is publicly standing behind Susie Wiles. One of her predecessors thinks she\u2019ll leave the White House after the midterms anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney predicted Sunday that Wiles will depart after November\u2019s elections \u2014 while pushing back on suggestions that she has lost her grip on the president\u2019s inner circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf she leaves, and I think she probably will, it\u2019s not necessarily because she\u2019s fallen out of favor with Trump,\u201d Mulvaney told NewsNation\u2019s \u201cThe Hill Sunday,\u201d according to The Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just a natural sort of time to make that change,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The prediction lands amid mounting reports about potential replacements and a POLITICO story that reportedly sent Trump into a fury. But Mulvaney\u2019s assessment came with a distinction: Wiles could leave on her own terms while still wielding considerable influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Report That Reportedly Set Trump Off<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The latest round of speculation escalated after POLITICO reported that Trump had privately sounded out allies about possible replacements for his chief of staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Mediaite\u2019s account of POLITICO\u2019s reporting, aide Natalie Harp printed Thursday\u2019s Playbook newsletter and handed it to Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president reportedly \u201cblew up\u201d over the negative headlines about Wiles. Three people familiar with the episode described a \u201cfreakout,\u201d while Wiles and her allies worked the phones to contain the fallout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

POLITICO also reported that Trump made additional calls about Wiles after reading the story, according to a person with direct knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has forcefully rejected suggestions that his chief of staff is on the chopping block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSusie Wiles is my loyal and longest serving Chief of Staff \u2014 there is a reason for that. She has been with me since the beginning, is my trusted advisor, and has my COMPLETE confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

A Press Secretary\u2019s Exit Fuels The Chatter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The hiring and rapid departure of press secretary Katie Zacharia added fuel to questions about Wiles\u2019s standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to The Hill, reports suggested Wiles had distanced herself from Zacharia\u2019s appointment. Mulvaney offered his own theory about how that became public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think she probably leaked it out that she was not involved in the hiring of Katie Zacharia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

That was Mulvaney\u2019s speculation, rather than an established account of a leak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

POLITICO subsequently reported that Wiles helped arrange Zacharia\u2019s appearance with Sean Hannity, whose questioning put the new press secretary\u2019s credentials and troubled debut under a brighter spotlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fox News disputed that account, telling The Hill that Hannity controls his interviews and that Wiles and White House spokesperson Danielle Alvarez had nothing to do with the booking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mulvaney viewed the reports of Wiles\u2019s possible involvement in Zacharia\u2019s downfall as a sign that the chief of staff still carries weight inside the administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Potential Successors Begin Circling<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, The Washington Post reported Friday that Stephen Miller, Lee Zeldin and Bill Pulte had begun positioning themselves for the job should Wiles depart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
