But there\u2019s one problem with treating that endorsement as a done deal: They haven\u2019t discussed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vice president acknowledged that uncertainty during a Monday interview with journalist Mark Halperin on 2WAY, leaving open the possibility that Trump could let a Republican primary unfold before picking a favorite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think if I run, the president will endorse me,\u201d Vance said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/politics\/jd-vance-not-sure-trump-would-endorse-him-in-2028-i-dont-know-man\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mediaite\u2019s account of the interview<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when Halperin asked whether that endorsement would come immediately, the answer became less certain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would think so, but I don\u2019t know, man,\u201d Vance replied. \u201cI haven\u2019t talked to him about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>An Endorsement Worth Waiting For<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The admission followed Vance\u2019s argument that Trump\u2019s backing carries extraordinary weight with Republican voters, who trust the president\u2019s judgment after watching him battle the party establishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cObviously, the voters are gonna decide,\u201d Vance told Halperin. \u201cDonald Trump is only one vote of many, but I think his endorsement is still the most powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That makes the timing consequential. Vance said Trump could reasonably decide to watch candidates compete before intervening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAgain, I think I would get his endorsement, but I also think there\u2019s something to be said for people actually running their own race,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Halperin suggested Vance might struggle as a presidential candidate, the vice president acknowledged the possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI might be terrible at it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Trump Keeps His Options Open<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked Tuesday about backing Vance, Trump praised his vice president but confirmed they had not discussed the matter. He said the immediate priority was getting through the midterm elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s support has helped Vance before. <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/amp\/Politics\/jd-vance-thinks-trump-endorse-ran-president\/story?id=137400567\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ABC News reported<\/a> that his endorsement helped propel Vance to victory in Ohio\u2019s 2022 Republican Senate primary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, Vance says he remains undecided about running in 2028.
