Massie alleged that Hegseth continued the conflict without congressional authorization, disregarded Congress\u2019s direction to withdraw and failed to prevent unnecessary civilian casualties. Those are allegations underlying the impeachment effort, rather than findings established by a congressional trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon defended Hegseth when Massie launched the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSecretary Hegseth has been a transformative leader for the Department of War,\u201d Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson told ABC News in September. Wilson also said the department stood behind his leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Massie\u2019s latest warning comes as Democrats sharpen their own threats against the Pentagon chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hill reported Monday that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Democrats would run Hegseth \u201cout of town\u201d if they capture the House. The outlet has also <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/6155361-trump-hegseth-pentagon-leadership-clash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported that Senate Democrats are discussing his departure<\/a> as a condition for cooperation on defense issues during the lame-duck session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The timing matters: Lawmakers returning immediately after the election will still belong to the current Congress. Any newly elected Democratic majority would take power in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Possible Opening in Tennessee<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, speculation about Hegseth\u2019s next move has shifted toward Tennessee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As previously covered by <a href=\"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/news\/pete-hegseth-reportedly-eyeing-pivot-to-senate-seat\/njackson\/2026\/10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GAND<\/a>, Puck\u2019s Leigh Ann Caldwell reported that Hegseth has been seeking an appointment to Sen. Marsha Blackburn\u2019s seat should the Tennessee Republican win the governor\u2019s race and leave the Senate. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/pete-hegseth-reportedly-angling-for-senate-seat-as-impeachment-fears-grow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mediaite\u2019s account of Caldwell\u2019s reporting<\/a> also identified Rep. Tim Burchett as another interested contender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That scenario remains speculative. Blackburn would first have to win the governorship, and no appointment of Hegseth has been announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell previously rejected the speculation, telling Axios that Hegseth remained focused on leading the department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An Impeachment Vote Would Be the First Hurdle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Massie\u2019s pledge does not guarantee Hegseth\u2019s removal. The House can impeach an official by a simple majority, but conviction and removal require a two-thirds vote of senators present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Massie is also approaching the end of his own congressional tenure after losing his Republican primary to a Trump-backed challenger.
