{"id":3140,"date":"2023-02-03T09:51:39","date_gmt":"2023-02-03T14:51:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/?p=3140"},"modified":"2023-02-03T09:51:39","modified_gmt":"2023-02-03T14:51:39","slug":"as-crime-soars-gop-house-hopes-to-block-dcs-new-soft-on-crime-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/opinion\/as-crime-soars-gop-house-hopes-to-block-dcs-new-soft-on-crime-bill\/paul-crespo\/2023\/02\/","title":{"rendered":"As Crime Soars, GOP House Hopes to Block DC&#8217;s New \u2018Soft on Crime\u2019 Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>ANALYSIS<\/strong> \u2013 As crazy as it may seem, even as violent crime continues unabated and illegal aliens flood into our nation\u2019s capital, the extreme left (aka \u2018progressive\u2019) local D.C. government is trying to pass a revised criminal code that&nbsp;would lower penalties for a number of violent criminal offenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the D.C. criminal code is outdated and in major need of revision, making existing laws even more lenient is a recipe for disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why the new GOP-led House is moving to quash D.C.\u2019s latest leftist crime-enabling law by using Congress\u2019 constitutional authority over the District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Murders, carjackings and armed robberies have been in the news almost daily recently, and while the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) claimed that murders decreased in 2022 vs. 2021, the numbers are up for debate and still extremely high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As&nbsp;a special police officer and security contractor in D.C., I have personally seen the rise in violent crime over the past three years, in part fueled by the BLM riots of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 200 murders were reported last year. This is the second year in a row the number has topped 200.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, other violent crimes, such as armed robbery and carjacking, appear on the rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking your car by force in D.C.,&nbsp;increased by 46% in April 2022 when compared to April 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Armed robberies with a firearm were up 23% by October, having climbed well over 1,000 by that month last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And 2023 is off to a worse start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/news\/local\/2023-off-to-violent-start-for-dc-with-crime-up-and-some-residents-worried\/3250357\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According<\/a>&nbsp;to a January NBC Washington headline: \u201c2023 Off to Violent Start for DC, With Crime Up and Some Residents Worried.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This,&nbsp;in a city which already has one of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/usafacts.org\/articles\/which-states-have-the-least-and-most-crime\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highest crime<\/a>&nbsp;rates in the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Washington, D.C. has had the highest violent crime rate of any city in the U.S., at 1,000 crimes per 100,000 residents, based on 2020 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, it&nbsp;had the highest property crime rate in 2020, at 3,493 crimes per 100,000 residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite all this, in Nov. 2022, the leftist D.C. Council approved the Revised Criminal Code Act (RCCA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This proposed law reduces penalties for violent crimes, including carjackings, robberies and homicides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To her credit, the more centrist Democrat mayor, Muriel Bowser, vetoed the bill in January, but the far-left council overrode Bowser\u2019s veto less than two weeks later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why the GOP-led House has decided to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Daily Caller&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/02\/02\/house-republicans-andrew-clyde-bill-hagerty-washington-dc-resolution-block-crime-bill\/?utm_source=piano&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=breaking&amp;pnespid=sbM_FzRbPb0F0KDEvSqyH42Nug2wSJkudea6zLM3qx1m1aicgE3d5l98uqocDw5uzM44oOX.jw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Republican Georgia Rep. Andrew Clyde and Tennesee Sen. Bill Hagerty will introduce a joint resolution of disapproval to block the Washington, D.C., Council\u2019s Revised Criminal Code Act of 2022, which would lower penalties for a number of violent criminal offenses, according to legislation first obtained by the Daily Caller.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Clyde will introduce the House version Thursday. Hagerty will introduce the Senate companion next week, sources with knowledge confirmed to the Caller.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Congress&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/statehood.dc.gov\/page\/congressional-intervention#:~:text=Under%20the%20District%20Clause%20of,or%20even%20overturn%20such%20legislation.&amp;text=Challenged%20DC's%20efforts%20to%20control%20gun%20violence.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can exercise authority over D.C. local affairs<\/a>, according to the District Clause of the Constitution (Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17), and Congress reviews all D.C. legislation before it can become law. Congress can change or even overturn D.C. legislation and can impose new laws on the district.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>As Congressman Clyde said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>The D.C. Council\u2019s radical rewrite of the criminal code threatens the well-being of both Washingtonians and visitors \u2014 making our nation\u2019s capital city a safe haven for violent criminals. In response to this dangerous and severely misguided measure, it\u2019s now up to Congress to save our nation\u2019s capital from itself.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The House GOP effort will still have a tough road to follow.
