{"id":3668,"date":"2023-03-28T13:04:45","date_gmt":"2023-03-28T17:04:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/?p=3668"},"modified":"2023-03-28T13:04:45","modified_gmt":"2023-03-28T17:04:45","slug":"florida-democrat-chair-files-ethics-complaint-against-desantis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/news\/florida-democrat-chair-files-ethics-complaint-against-desantis\/njackson\/2023\/03\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida Democrat Chair Files Ethics Complaint Against DeSantis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Florida Democrat chair Nikki Fried has filed an ethics complaint against Gov.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/?s=DeSantis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ron DeSantis<\/a>\u00a0(R), accusing him of violating state law by accepting gifts from his political committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The complaint centers primarily on a three-day retreat at the Four Seasons in Palm Beach, Fla., where DeSantis met with donors and Republican lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/3921642-florida-democratic-chair-files-ethics-complaint-against-desantis-over-retreat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Hill<\/a>, the complaint cites several other expenditures by the committee, including $142,000 at the Four Seasons Hotel Miami for a meeting expense and nearly $12,000 for food and beverages at Dirty French Steakhouse in Miami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis is yet another example of Ron DeSantis arrogantly thinking he is above the law. No one is above the law,\u201d Fried said in a statement. \u201cWhile Floridians face some of the highest property insurance and mortgage rates in the state\u2019s history, DeSantis is hobnobbing with special interest donors and lining his pockets with freebies. Floridians deserve answers, and DeSantis needs to be held accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>DeSantis\u2019s office brushed off that complaint as \u201cpolitically motivated,\u201d and dismissed Fried\u2019s complaint on Monday with a similar remark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cJust like the one from two weeks ago, we\u2019ll just add this to the list of frivolous &amp; politically motivated attacks,\u201d Taryn Fenske, DeSantis\u2019s communications director, tweeted. \u201cLouder for the Dems in the back: It\u2019s inappropriate to use ethics complaints for partisan purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Fried\u2019s complaint is the second filed against DeSantis in less than two weeks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make America Great Again Inc., the main super PAC aligned with former President Trump,\u00a0filed a complaint earlier this month\u00a0accusing the Florida governor of violating state and federal law by running a \u201cshadow presidential campaign.\u201d <strong>(RELATED: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/news\/ron-desantis-hit-with-ethics-complaint-from-trump-super-pac\/njackson\/2023\/03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ron DeSantis Hit With Ethics Complaint From Trump Super PAC<\/a><strong>)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/ron-desantis-hit-ethics-complaint-trump-super-pac-rcna74977\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NBC News&nbsp;<\/a>first reported the complaint alleges that DeSantis has already checked all the boxes for someone considering a run for the White House, including&nbsp;making stops in early primary states; writing a book; raising tens of millions of dollars to go into a state-level committee that could be transferred to a federal super PAC; and watching a constellation of supporter-led super PACs and an outside nonprofit group pop up, some with the stated intention of getting DeSantis to run for president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pro-Trump super PAC says the combination of those steps violates a handful of Florida laws about officeholders\u2019 accepting illegal gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis letter provides ample evidence to support a finding of probable cause by the Florida Commission on Ethics that Governor DeSantis, in concert with certain associated political committees, political consultants and a 501(c)(4) organization, has solicited and received millions of dollars\u2019 worth of illegal gifts in violation of Florida State ethics laws and the Florida Constitution,\u201d the draft complaint reads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florida Democrat chair Nikki Fried has filed an ethics complaint against Gov.\u00a0Ron DeSantis\u00a0(R), accusing him of violating state law by accepting gifts from his political committee.
