Former President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0is reportedly under investigation by federal prosecutors probing the Jan. 6 Capitol riot for alleged wire fraud related to his fundraising efforts between the 2020 presidential election<\/a> and President\u00a0Joe Biden\u2019s\u00a0inauguration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Washington Post<\/em>\u00a0reported the news on Wednesday evening, citing \u201ceight people with knowledge of the investigation\u201d who \u201cspoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing criminal investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report explains that Special Counsel\u00a0Jack Smith<\/a>\u00a0is investigating potential wire fraud crimes committed by Trump and his \u201cfundraising operation\u201d for using false claims of election fraud to elicit donations, which would \u201cviolated wire fraud laws.\u201d The\u00a0Post<\/em>\u00a0notes that under federal law it is \u201cillegal to make false representations over email to swindle people out of money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report<\/a> adds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smith\u2019s office has sent subpoenas in recent weeks to\u00a0Trump<\/a>\u00a0advisers and former campaign aides, Republican operatives and other consultants involved in the 2020 presidential campaign, the people said. They have also heard testimony from some of these figures in front of a Washington grand jury, some of the people said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The subpoenas, which were issued in early March, have not previously been reported and are aimed at gathering private communications between Trump and his fundraising staff to better understand whether or not they believed the claims behind their messaging, which the\u00a0Post<\/em>\u00a0reports \u201cgenerated more than $200 million in donations from conservatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Smith and his investigator are probing whether fundraising emails containing rhetoric such as, \u201cThey want you to think this Election is over, but they are wrong\u201d\u00a0constitute actual fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
