A\u00a0New York\u00a0court tossed former President\u00a0Donald Trump\u2019s lawsuit against\u00a0The New York Times, dealing a significant blow to Trump\u2019s efforts to exact damages for the leak of his private tax returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New York Supreme Court Justice Robert Reed ordered Trump to pay all legal expenses, attorney fees, and other costs in the Wednesday filing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to The Daily Wire<\/a>, the judge said Trump\u2019s claims against the paper \u201cfail as a matter of constitutional law\u201d and said the Times\u2019 reporting was \u201cprotected First Amendment activity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s niece, Mary Trump, was also targeted in the lawsuit, which alleged that the Times and Mary hatched an \u201cinsidious plot\u201d to leak the former president\u2019s private tax records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his lawsuit, Trump alleged that Times reporters convinced Mary \u201cto smuggle the records out of her attorney\u2019s office.\u201d The former president\u2019s lawsuit stated that the newspaper and niece were motivated \u201cby a personal vendetta and their desire to gain fame, notoriety, acclaim and a financial windfall and were further intended to advance their political agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The leaked tax documents were first reported by the Times in 2018 in an\u00a0article<\/a>\u00a0titled, \u201cTrump Engaged in Suspect Tax Schemes as He Reaped Riches From His Father.\u201d The article said that Trump benefitted enormously from his father\u2019s wealth when the former president built his own real estate empire. The Times report said Trump participated in \u201cdubious tax schemes,\u201d as well as \u201coutright fraud\u201d to keep his fortune.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The report earned The New York Times a Pulitzer Prize in 2019 for explanatory reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
