{"id":5511,"date":"2023-11-09T13:29:52","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T18:29:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/?p=5511"},"modified":"2023-11-09T13:29:53","modified_gmt":"2023-11-09T18:29:53","slug":"watergate-prosecutor-says-trump-is-toast-in-fraud-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/business\/watergate-prosecutor-says-trump-is-toast-in-fraud-trial\/njackson\/2023\/11\/","title":{"rendered":"Watergate Prosecutor Says \u2018Trump Is Toast\u2019 In Fraud Trial\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Former Watergate prosecutor Nick Ackerman said former President Trump is \u201ctoast\u201d in his New York civil fraud case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New York&nbsp;Attorney General&nbsp;Letitia James\u2019 case accuses Trump, his two adult sons, the&nbsp;Trump Organization, and top executives of falsely inflating the values of Trump\u2019s real estate properties and other assets in order to get tax benefits and better loan terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James seeks around $250 million in damages, and she wants to bar Trump and his co-defendants from running another business in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/4300771-former-watergate-prosecutor-trump-toast-ny-fraud-trial\/\">The Hill,<\/a> Ackerman argued people are not only focused on the former president\u2019s testimony but also his deposition with James\u2019s lawyers last summer, where he invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 400 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cNow what does it mean to take the Fifth Amendment? It means that you are refusing to answer a question, because a truthful answer would tend to be incriminating,\u201d Ackerman said. \u201cThen what did Donald Trump do last week? He went into court and said, \u2018Oh, I didn\u2019t do anything fraudulent, I wasn\u2019t involved in a fraud.\u2019 Which is just the opposite what in effect he was saying when he took the Fifth Amendment in his deposition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo you\u2019ve got contradictory testimony,\u201d Ackerman continued. \u201cYou can use his assertion of the Fifth Amendment against him to basically find that he\u2019s lying, that he\u2019s manipulating the system when he goes in, refuses to answer questions, answers the questions in a half-baked manner.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this week when Trump took the stand he fiercely defended his business practices and condemned those involved in the case as politically motivated \u201cTrump haters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI just don\u2019t see how this judge at the end of the day is not going to find that, with respect to Donald Trump \u2026 \u2018Liar, liar, pants on fire,&#8217;\u201d Ackerman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ackerman said that in his more than 40 years of civil law experience, he has never seen anyone \u201cdo such a stupid move as to suddenly start testifying\u201d after they\u2019ve taken the Fifth Amendment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Watergate prosecutor Nick Ackerman said former President Trump is \u201ctoast\u201d in his New York civil fraud case.
