Two Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee have recommended the Justice Department look at pursuing charges against former Trump attorney\u00a0Michael Cohen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The criminal referral letter sent by House Intelligence Chairman Mike Turner (R-Ohio) and committee member Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) accuses Cohen of committing perjury and having \u201cknowingly made false statements\u201d before the congressional panel four years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat Mr. Cohen was willing to openly and brazenly state at trial that he lied to Congress on this specific issue is startling,\u201d the referral letter reads. \u201cHis willingness to make such a statement alone should necessitate an investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amid cross-examination by Trump\u2019s legal team late last month, Cohen\u00a0testified that he lied\u00a0under oath to the House Intelligence Committee in February 2019. In that testimony, Cohen said Trump did not ask him to inflate the numbers detailed in his statements of financial condition. However, Cohen then changed his testimony last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alina Habba, one of Trump\u2019s attorneys, tore into Cohen over the discrepancy during cross-examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cMr. Cohen, were you being honest in front of the Permanent Select Committee when you testified on February 28, 2019?\u201d Habba asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo,\u201d Cohen replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo you lied under oath in February of 2019? Is that your testimony?\u201d Habba pressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes,\u201d Cohen said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
