Retired Justice Sandra Day O\u2019Connor, the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court\u00a0passed away Friday. She was 93 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA daughter of the American Southwest, Sandra Day O\u2019Connor blazed a historic trail as our Nation\u2019s first female Justice,\u201d Chief Justice John Roberts said <\/a>in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe met that challenge with undaunted determination, indisputable ability, and engaging candor. We at the Supreme Court mourn the loss of a beloved colleague, a fiercely independent defender of the rule of law, and an eloquent advocate for civics education,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd we celebrate her enduring legacy as a true public servant and patriot.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Connor died of \u201ccomplications related to advanced dementia, probably Alzheimer\u2019s, and a respiratory illness,\u201d the court announced in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just over a decade after she retired, O\u2019Connor announced in 2018 that she was withdrawing from public life after being diagnosed with dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nominated by then-President Reagan in 1981, O\u2019Connor became the first woman to serve on the nation\u2019s highest bench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
