Earlier in the day,\u00a0Hunter Biden\u00a0defied the House Oversight Committee&#8217;s subpoena to testify behind closed doors, pushing lawmakers to initiate contempt of Congress proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: The House of Representatives has officially voted to continue its impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden.<br><br>Every Democrat voted against it. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YB9pkb2pQV\">pic.twitter.com\/YB9pkb2pQV<\/a><\/p>&mdash; RNC Research (@RNCResearch) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RNCResearch\/status\/1735070439079035349?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 13, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hill&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/4358911-biden-impeachment-inquiry-house-gop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">continues<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The resolution makes official an inquiry into Biden that has been underway for months, after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in September said that various GOP probes into the president would be under the umbrella of impeachment \u2014 but did not hold an official vote.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Republicans have said they moved to formalize the inquiry in part because the White House responded to document requests last month with a letter that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/4315512-white-house-gops-impeachment-inquiry-is-unconstitutional-congressional-harassment\/\">argued<\/a>&nbsp;their inquiry was unconstitutional due to the lack of a vote, citing a Trump-era legal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/americanliberty.news\/tag\/opinion\/\">opinion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re very pleased with the vote today. I think that&#8217;s it a message loud and clear to the White House. We expect you to comply,\u201d House Oversight Committee Chair\u00a0James Comer\u00a0(R-Ky.), who is leading one of the\u00a0arms\u00a0of the probe, said after the vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Biden ripped\u00a0House Republicans\u00a0for what he called a \u201cbaseless political stunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>After the vote, the president released a statement, saying in part: \u201cI wake up every day focused on the issues facing the American people \u2013 real issues that impact their lives, and the strength and security of our country and the world. Unfortunately, House Republicans are not joining me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Senate side, some Republicans remain skeptical of the investigation&#8217;s most salacious allegations. If the House votes to approve articles of impeachment against Biden, it will be imperative to win over the following holdouts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sen.\u00a0Mitt Romney\u00a0(R-Utah), who stated that no evidence had been found of wrongdoing by President Biden himself. However, he added that if such evidence is uncovered, it would be critical and important. \u201cBut we haven&#8217;t seen that yet,\u201d he added.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sen.\u00a0Shelley Moore Capito\u00a0(R-W.Va.), a member of the chamber&#8217;s GOP leadership, said,\u201dI don&#8217;t see any evidence there\u201d before conceding that \u201cThe House is going to do what the House is going to do. I don&#8217;t have any influence.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) argued that Republicans have not learned from the Democrats&#8217; strategic mistakes in their first impeachment of former President Trump. According to Rounds, the Senate did not have sufficient evidence to convict Trump during the impeachment trial. Democrats \u201cwere trying to develop it in the trial.\u201d Rounds emphasized that House Republicans must provide clear and incontrovertible evidence of impeachable offenses before bringing it to trial before the Senate.
