{"id":5815,"date":"2023-12-27T14:30:53","date_gmt":"2023-12-27T19:30:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/?p=5815"},"modified":"2023-12-28T11:04:18","modified_gmt":"2023-12-28T16:04:18","slug":"special-counsel-seeks-to-silence-trump-through-202-election-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/news\/special-counsel-seeks-to-silence-trump-through-202-election-trial\/njackson\/2023\/12\/","title":{"rendered":"Special Counsel Seeks To Silence Trump Through 2020 Election Trial"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Special Counsel Jack Smith is <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/4379050-jack-smith-judge-trump-political-attacks-2020-election\/\">asking<\/a> a judge to prohibit former President Donald Trump from making \u201cpolitical attacks\u201d about his federal 2020 election interference case set to go to trial in early spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThrough public statements, filings, and argument in hearings before the Court, the defense has attempted to inject into this case partisan political attacks and irrelevant and prejudicial issues that have no place in a jury trial,\u201d senior assistant special counsel Molly Gaston wrote in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.dcd.258149\/gov.uscourts.dcd.258149.191.0_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">court papers filed Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAlthough the Court can recognize these efforts for what they are and disregard them, the jury \u2014 if subjected to them \u2014 may not,\u201d she continued. \u201cThe Court should not permit the defendant to turn the courtroom into a forum in which he propagates irrelevant disinformation, and should reject his attempt to inject politics into this proceeding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prosecutors\u2019 motion asks the court to bar Trump and his lawyers from introducing evidence that suggests he is being selectively prosecuted, that prosecutors are coordinating with the Biden administration or that foreign actors interfered in the 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It further urges U.S. District Judge&nbsp;Tanya Chutkan,&nbsp;who is overseeing the trial proceedings in Washington, to prohibit certain evidence related to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prosecutors are seeking to prevent Trump from placing blame on the National Guard or the D.C. mayor for the attack or from claiming undercover agents helped provoke violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAllowing the defendant to introduce evidence about undercover actors would inevitably lead to confusing minitrials on collateral issues, such as the identities and intentions of the alleged undercover actors,\u201d prosecutors wrote. \u201cFor example, it may require the Government to introduce evidence to show that people whom the defendant alleges were undercover actors actually were his vehement supporters.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump is charged in the case with four federal felonies. He has pleaded not guilty and denied wrongdoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trial is currently slated for March 4, however, Trump&#8217;s appeals may interfere with the scheduled
