{"id":6367,"date":"2024-03-15T14:34:56","date_gmt":"2024-03-15T18:34:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/?p=6367"},"modified":"2024-03-15T14:34:58","modified_gmt":"2024-03-15T18:34:58","slug":"georgia-judge-floats-possible-gag-order-for-da-willis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/news\/georgia-judge-floats-possible-gag-order-for-da-willis\/njackson\/2024\/03\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia Judge Floats Possible Gag Order For DA Willis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On Friday, Georgia Judge\u00a0Scott McAfee\u00a0suggested that a gag order could be imposed on the Fulton County District Attorney\u2019s office to prevent it from mentioning the case against former\u00a0President Trump\u00a0and other defendants in a public setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McAfee\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/4527043-georgia-judge-rule-fani-willis-disqualification-what-we-know\/\">ruled<\/a>\u00a0on Friday that Willis\u2019s once-romantic relationship with special prosecutor\u00a0Nathan Wade\u00a0constituted an appearance of conflict of interest in the racketeering case and barred the prosecutors from continuing to oversee it unless either Willis or Wade leaves the case.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe time may well have arrived for an order preventing the State from mentioning the case in any public forum to prevent prejudicial pretrial publicly, but that is not the motion presently before the Court,\u201d McAfee said in suggesting the possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his 23-page ruling, the judge\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/4534665-georgia-judge-willis-trump-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criticized the district attorney<\/a>\u00a0at multiple turns, both for the relationship and for her public comments during her testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After being accused of having an affair with Wade, in her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/4408601-fani-willis-breaks-silence-on-misconduct-accusations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first public comments<\/a>, Willis defended his qualifications and role in the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She then implied that race played a role in the criticism of their relationship. Willis argued that people had only attacked Wade, not the other two special prosecutors hired to the case, who are white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McAfee said her speech was intended to \u201ccast racial aspersions\u201d at Mike Roman, one of Trump\u2019s co-defendants in the case, who brought forth the accusations against Willis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McAfee argued that her comment was \u201cstill legally improper.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cProviding this type of public comment creates dangerous waters for the District Attorney to wade further into,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The judge then went as far to say that a gag order may be possible to prevent a future jury pool from being prejudiced by Willis\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, Georgia Judge\u00a0Scott McAfee\u00a0suggested that a gag order could be imposed on the Fulton County District Attorney\u2019s office to prevent it from mentioning the case against former\u00a0President Trump\u00a0and other defendants in a public setting.
