{"id":6755,"date":"2024-05-10T10:16:20","date_gmt":"2024-05-10T14:16:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/?p=6755"},"modified":"2024-05-10T10:16:21","modified_gmt":"2024-05-10T14:16:21","slug":"new-york-launches-probe-into-trump-judge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/business\/new-york-launches-probe-into-trump-judge\/njackson\/2024\/05\/","title":{"rendered":"New York Launches Probe Into Trump Judge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct has launched an investigation into a New York attorney\u2019s claim that he advised Judge Arthur Engoron in the case against former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorney Adam Leitman Bailey told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/investigations\/new-york-lawyer-tried-advise-judge-trump-trial-civil-fraud\/5395676\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WNBC-TV<\/a>&nbsp;that he had a courthouse conversation with Engoron three weeks before the judge would slap Trump with a $454 million&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-savages-judge-engoron-whopping-350-million-fine-ruled-even-saw-case\/?ff_source=email&amp;ff_medium=elliance-patriot-update&amp;ff_campaign=CAN&amp;ff_content=2024-05-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">penalty<\/a>&nbsp;for fraudulently inflating the value of his assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New York judges are barred from considering outside opinions in such a way when litigating a case, yet Bailey said he discussed the legal questions at length with the judge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judge Engoron\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/trump\/borders-on-pathological-key-section-of-judge-engorons-ruling-blasts-trumps-for-refusal-to-admit-error\/\">ruling<\/a>\u00a0ordered Trump to pay nearly $355 million, Donald Jr. and Eric to each pay $4 million, and ex-Trump Org chief financial officer\u00a0Allen Weisselberg\u00a0to pay $1 million. The order also barred Trump from serving as a corporate officer or a director of a company in New York for three years, and barred his sons for two years. The Trumps did avoid the so-called \u201ccorporate death penalty;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI actually had the ability to speak to him three weeks ago,\u201d Bailey said in an interview with the station on Feb. 16, just hours before the judge issued his ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI saw him in the corner [at the courthouse], and I told my client, \u2018I need to go,&#8217;\u201d he recounted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd I walked over, and we started talking \u2026 I wanted him to know what I think and why \u2026 I really want him to get it right,\u201d the attorney continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said he \u201cexplained to\u201d Engoron that ruling against Trump would have far-reaching implications beyond destroying the former president, including damaging New York\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Trump were forced to pay a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-posts-bond-ny-fraud-case-crushing-democrats-fantasies\/?ff_source=email&amp;ff_medium=elliance-patriot-update&amp;ff_campaign=CAN&amp;ff_content=2024-05-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hefty fine<\/a>&nbsp;and shut down his business, it would make other companies concerned about similarly being targeted at any time, even when there were no actual damages or victims, as in this case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s legal team raised the same points, which Engoron ignored in his verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a later interview with WNBC, Bailey walked back his claims slightly, saying they \u201cdidn\u2019t even mention the word \u2018Donald Trump&#8217;\u201d during their conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the attorney admitted that it was understood exactly what they were discussing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell, obviously, we weren\u2019t talking about the Mets,\u201d Bailey said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the New York State Rules of Judicial Conduct, \u201ca judge shall not initiate, permit, or consider ex parte communications, or consider other communications made to the judge outside the presence of the parties or their lawyers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Al Baker, a spokesman for the state\u2019s Office of Court Administration, denied that the judge had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/california-judge-rules-trump-ally-disbarred-role-2020-election\/?ff_source=email&amp;ff_medium=elliance-patriot-update&amp;ff_campaign=CAN&amp;ff_content=2024-05-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">broken those rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe decision Justice Engoron issued February 16 was his alone, was deeply considered, and was wholly uninfluenced by this individual,\u201d Baker said in a statement, according to WNBC.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct has launched an investigation into a New York attorney\u2019s claim that he advised Judge Arthur Engoron in the case against former President Donald Trump.
