He was bullish on Hillary Clinton in 2016 but cautioned Trump\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/magazine\/nate-silver-there-were-some-models-that-gave-trump-as-little-as-a-1-or-2-percent-chance-of-winning-in-2016\/2020\/02\/24\/21e3e978-4143-11ea-b5fc-eefa848cde99_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">had a reasonable chance<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The candidate who I honest-to-God think has a better chance (Trump) isn\u2019t the candidate I\u2019d rather have win (Biden),&#8221; Silver, who formerly ran polling analysis website FiveThirtyEight, wrote in his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.natesilver.net\/p\/nate-silver-2024-president-election-polls-model\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;Silver Bulletin&#8221; substack<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Silver&#8217;s forecast model, based on 40,000 simulations, found Trump had a 65.7% of winning the electoral college, compared to Biden, who had a 33.7% chance. However, Biden is slightly favored to win the popular vote. Trump lost the popular vote in 2016 but won the presidency with a slew of narrow swing state wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If the Electoral College\/popular vote gap looks\u00a0<em>anything<\/em>\u00a0like it did in 1 or 2020, you\u2019d expect Biden to be in deep trouble if the popular vote is roughly tied,&#8221; Silver wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data expert wrote that there was still time for Biden to turn things around and suggested the president give the nomination to Vice President Harris or someone else at the Democratic convention.
