U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan agreed to unseal additional filings from special counsel Jack Smith laying out his election interference case against former President Trump<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chutkan agreed to a request<\/a> from Smith to unseal exhibits that accompany his 180-page brief<\/a> asserting that prosecutors can still bring much of their Jan. 6 case against Trump in the wake of a Supreme Court decision granting former presidents broad criminal immunity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Chutkan granted Smith\u2019s motion to post redacted versions of the exhibits, which could include grand jury transcripts, texts and other evidence assembled by prosecutors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Hill reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe court determines that the Government\u2019s proposed redactions to the Appendix are appropriate, and that Defendant\u2019s blanket objections to further unsealing are without merit. As the court has stated previously, \u2018Defendant\u2019s concern with the political consequences of these proceedings\u2019 is not a cognizable legal prejudice,\u2019\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Trump opposed both the unsealing of Smith\u2019s motion as well as the accompanying evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But Chutkan also agreed to stay her ruling for seven days after an earlier motion from Trump\u2019s legal team asked for additional time \u201cso that\u00a0President Trump\u00a0<\/a>can evaluate litigation options relating to the decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThere should be no further disclosures at this time of the so-called \u2018evidence\u2019 that the Special Counsel\u2019s Office has unlawfully cherry-picked and mischaracterized \u2014 during early voting in the 2024 Presidential election,\u201d Trump\u2019s team wrote in an earlier filing Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
