{"id":8573,"date":"2025-01-07T09:49:43","date_gmt":"2025-01-07T14:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/?p=8573"},"modified":"2025-01-07T09:49:44","modified_gmt":"2025-01-07T14:49:44","slug":"trump-requesting-attorney-general-block-special-counsel-reports-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greatamericanewsdesk.com\/government\/trump-requesting-attorney-general-block-special-counsel-reports-release\/njackson\/2025\/01\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Requesting Attorney General Block Special Counsel Report&#8217;s Release"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>President-elect Trump and his two co-defendants in the\u00a0classified documents case\u00a0are working to block special counsel\u00a0Jack Smith\u00a0from releasing his final report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/67490071\/679\/united-states-v-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The motion<\/a> filed late Monday, the fourth anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol asks Judge Aileen Cannon to bar Smith from his plans to release his two-volume report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An accompanying letter from Trump\u2019s legal team to Attorney General\u00a0Merrick Garland\u00a0reveals they have already reviewed a draft of the report, asking Garland to fire Smith and leave the decision of whether to release the report to the president-elect\u2019s incoming attorney general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump has nominated Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi for the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Smith was responsible for the report, Attorney General Garland makes the final decision to release it to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorneys for Trump\u2019s two co-defendants in the Mar-a-Lago case, valet Walt Nauta and property manager Carlos de Oliveira, rely on a ruling from Cannon that found Smith was\u00a0unlawfully appointed\u00a0in asking her to block the report\u2019s release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith\u2019s team responded with an early Tuesday morning filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hill <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5070960-donald-trump-merrick-garland-jack-smith-report\/\">reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe Department can commit that the Attorney General will not release that volume to the public, if he does at all, before Friday, January 10, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.,\u201d Smith\u2019s team wrote, the same day Trump is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/5066344-trump-hush-money-sentence-jan-10\/\">set to be sentenced<\/a>\u00a0in his New York hush money case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Draft Report violates fundamental norms regarding the presumption of innocence, including with respect to third parties unnecessarily impugned by Smith\u2019s false claims. Releasing the report to the public without significant redactions (that would render its release meaningless) would violate prohibitions on extrajudicial statements by prosecutors,\u201d Trump\u2019s team wrote in the letter to Garland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is particularly problematic with respect to ongoing proceedings relating to Waltine Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, as well as others who Smith and his staff falsely characterize as co-conspirators in the Draft Report,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter to Garland reveals a few details about Smith\u2019s report, including that it contains information about \u201canticipated members of President Trump\u2019s incoming administration,\u201d something Trump\u2019s team complains could hinder their confirmation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It otherwise appears to mirror language already included in Smith\u2019s indictments of Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cVolume I of the Draft Report falsely asserts, without any jury determination, that\u00a0President Trump\u00a0and others \u2018engaged in an unprecedented criminal effort,\u2019 was \u2018the head of the criminal conspiracies,\u2019 and harbored a \u2018criminal design,\u2019\u201d Trump\u2019s legal team wrote in the letter. \u201cLikewise, Volume II asserts, without any supporting verdict, \u2018that Mr. Trump violated multiple federal criminal laws,\u2019 and that he and others engaged in \u2018criminal conduct.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President-elect Trump and his two co-defendants in the\u00a0classified documents case\u00a0are working to block special counsel\u00a0Jack Smith\u00a0from releasing his final report.
