President Trump responded to speculation that he will attempt to pursue a third term in the White House despite being prohibited by the U.S. Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a phone interview with\u00a0The Atlantic\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0Ashley Parker\u00a0and\u00a0Michael Scherer, Trump was\u00a0asked about a rumor<\/a>\u00a0that he had instructed the Justice Department to look into whether he could legally run for a third term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump denied the claim and seemed to laugh off the possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat would be a big shattering, wouldn\u2019t it?\u201d Trump mused, laughing. \u201cWell, maybe I\u2019m just trying to shatter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump acknowledged that his supporters routinely call for him to seek a third term but, ultimately, insisted he was not planning on it: \u201cIt\u2019s not something that I\u2019m looking to do. And I think it would be a very hard thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even as Trump publicly distances himself from a 2028 bid, The Atlantic<\/em> flagged how the Trump Organization has already rolled out \u201cTrump 2028\u201d hats, priced at $50 each.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

White House Press Secretary\u00a0Karoline Leavitt\u00a0said the hats were\u00a0\u201cflying off shelves\u201d<\/a>\u00a0since going on sale Thursday, but recently told Axios co-founder\u00a0Mike Allen it was \u201cnot something [Trump is] thinking of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Constitution\u2019s 22nd Amendment firmly bars a third term. A serious effort to amend the Constitution \u2013 however far-fetched \u2013 would require a two-thirds majority approval in Congress and backing from three-quarters of state governments. The Republicans, while in majority in both chambers, wouldn\u2019t have the power alone to achieve that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump first stirred third-term speculation in January, telling supporters it would be \u201cthe greatest honor\u201d to serve \u201ctwice or three times or four times\u201d \u2014 before claiming it was a joke aimed at the \u201cfake news media.\u201d
