The referral alleges that James may have falsified property records and misled lenders to receive government-backed loans and other favorable mortgage terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James has denied wrongdoing and called the investigation politically motivated, pointing to her office\u2019s civil fraud case against Trump. That case ultimately resulted in a $354 million judgment against the president, which also bars his<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her 2018 campaign for attorney general, James publicly stated she intended to pursue legal action against Trump and investigate his business dealings in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While campaigning, James vowed to shine a \u201cbright light into every corner\u201d of Trump\u2019s \u201creal estate dealings.\u201d Her critics \u2014 including Trump himself \u2014 would later argue that her civil lawsuit against him was a political witch hunt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In announcing the probe, US Attorney&nbsp;John A. Sarcone III&nbsp;took a swipe at James\u2019s 2018 campaign rhetoric about investigating President&nbsp;Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US attorney said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/tag\/letitia-james\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">James<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cunethically ran around the state campaigning on getting Donald Trump,\u201d and essentially accused her of finding a criminal target without an alleged crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We stand prepared to act in the capacity that we need to when and if we are informed there\u2019s a charge to be made. Unlike Letitia James, who unethically ran around the state campaigning on getting Donald Trump\u2026 my office conducts itself in a manner that is proper and professional.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Two weeks ago, James\u2019 attorney, Abbe Lowell, wrote a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/25913822-nyag-james-letter-to-ag-bondi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a>&nbsp;to Bondi, stating, \u201cI write to address the latest act of improper political retribution\u2014this time directed at Ms. James\u2014publicly instigated and endorsed by President Trump\u2026. This so-called \u2018Criminal Referral,\u2019 which recycles long-disproven allegations and is \u2018[b]ased on media reports\u2019 lacks any credible foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMr. Trump has singled out Attorney General James dating back to her campaign in 2018, and ever more so during and after the trial and verdict in New York in which Mr. Trump and the Trump Organization were found liable for financial fraud and assessed a $454 million judgment,\u201d Lowell claimed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Lowell referred to what he called \u201cbaseless allegations,\u201d saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Director Pulte cherry-picked an August 17, 2023 power of attorney that mistakenly stated the property to be Ms. James\u2019 principal residence and at the same time absolutely ignored her very clear and all caps statement two weeks earlier to the mortgage loan broker that \u201c[t]his property WILL NOT be my primary residence[.] It will be Shamice\u2019s primary residence.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1983, James, then a recent college graduate, bought a Queens residence with her father, with some documents listing her as his \u201cwife.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe asked his daughter (then a few years out of school) to help by allowing him to add her name to the mortgage application,\u201d Lowell argued. \u201cMr. James filled out the mortgage material (wherein he described their relationship as being \u2018spouses\u2019) and purchased the home without his daughter\u2019s involvement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, James, then 24 and a college graduate, signed the notarized mortgage, along with her father, on one of the document\u2019s three pages that listed her as his \u2018wife,\u2019\u201d the Times-Union&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/capitol\/article\/fbi-opens-formal-investigation-ny-attorney-20316868.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>. \u201cOne of those references to her being her father\u2019s \u2018wife\u2019 was just below her signature. Lending experts consulted by the Times Union said that by listing themselves as husband and wife, the pair may have qualified for a loan&nbsp;\u2014 or received better borrowing terms&nbsp;\u2014 than had they not been considered a couple due to income requirements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dan Abrams, who founded Mediaite,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/tv\/dan-abrams-critiques-media-for-largely-ignoring-wild-fraud-investigation-into-ny-attorney-general-letitia-james-this-is-serious\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;after Pulte\u2019<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The FBI and the US Attorneys Office for the Northern District of New York have launched a formal criminal investigation into New York Attorney General&nbsp;Letitia James&nbsp;for alleged mortgage fraud.
