Former Rep.\u00a0George Santos\u00a0(R-N.Y.), who\u00a0faces more than seven years\u00a0behind bars after\u00a0pleading guilty\u00a0to wire fraud and identity theft, is seeking clemency from President Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ll take a commutation, clemency, whatever the president is willing to give me,\u201d Santos told British media personality Piers Morgan in an episode of Morgan\u2019s YouTube show<\/a> \u201cUncensored\u201d on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSeven years and three months in prison for a first-time offender over campaign matters just screams \u2018over the top,\u2019 and I would appreciate if the president would consider,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0disgraced former lawmaker\u00a0also noted he is filling out paperwork to formally seek intervention from the White House before he reports to prison in July.<\/p>\n\n\n

In his interview with Morgan, Santos blasted former Biden administration Attorney General Merrick Garland, whom Trump and other conservative allies\u00a0have criticized\u00a0and accused of weaponizing the Department of Justice against the president and his allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI do believe this is an unfair judgment handed down to me,\u201d he said Thursday. \u201cI think there was a lot of politicization over the process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMerrick Garland\u00a0was by far the most disgraceful and disgraced political [attorney general] to ever serve in that capacity of the United States,\u201d Santos said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Santos was elected to represent New York\u2019s affluent Long Island-centered 3rd District in 2022, becoming the first openly gay Republican to win a House seat as a nonincumbent before his fall from grace.\u00a0The House\u00a0expelled Santos\u00a0from the chamber in a 311\u2013114 vote in 2023, as ethics charges mounted against him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
