A left-wing pressure campaign backed by billions in Soros family funding has played a starring role in the Democrat Senate’s decision to reject a clean funding bill — precipitating a government shutdown that began at 12:01 a.m. today, October 1, 2025.

The activist group Indivisible — long a fixture of the anti-Trump “resistance” movement — is now actively urging Democrats in the Senate to refuse bipartisan funding, even if it means keeping the government shuttered. Their website hosts a tool that lets supporters call their Democratic senators and push the scripted message: don’t vote to fund the government unless left-wing policy demands are met, and never offer a “blank check” to Trump.

Indivisible’s non-tax-deductible arm, Indivisible Project, has collected $7.6 million in grants from the Open Society Foundations (founded by George Soros) over the past eight years, according to the group’s own disclosures. Critics argue that the group’s posture signals that its priority is political warfare, not good governance.

The push is especially pointed at Senate leader Chuck Schumer, who in March buckled and joined Republicans in passing a spending bill — sparking outrage from the Left. Indivisible has not forgiven him: they publicly called on him to resign and even organized retirement-card drives against him.

Shutdown underway — what’s at stake

With Democrats refusing to support a clean continuing resolution (CR) — i.e. a stopgap funding bill without additional demands — the Senate failed to reach the 60 votes needed to advance the Republican proposal. The result: the government ceased non-essential operations as of 12:01 a.m. today.

  • Furloughs: An estimated 750,000 federal workers will be sent home without pay each day.
  • Essential services: Some agencies — like TSA, border enforcement, and veteran benefits — will continue under “essential” designations.
  • Cuts in operations: Many federal departments, from education to health agencies, will sharply curtail work.
  • Economic ripple effects: Analysts warn of lost income, delays in services, and stress on local communities.

Republicans argue that this shutdown is not the result of GOP overreach, but of intransigent left-wing forces demanding “healthcare giveaways, open-ended spending, and ideological concessions,” and then threatening collapse if they don’t get their way. In public statements, the Trump administration is casting blame squarely on Democrats — accusing them of refusing a clean funding route and prioritizing political posturing over governance.

Why the Left tolerated — or engineered — this

From a Republican perspective, the footprint of radical activist pressure in this process is impossible to ignore. Indivisible is not just calling on rank-and-file supporters — it is attempting to intimidate Senate Democrats, even those from swing states, into voting against their better interests.

That bold tactic illustrates how far some in the Democratic base are willing to push: not to govern, but to force maximal ideological concessions. By threatening a shutdown, Indivisible, with Soros backing, is effectively saying: dare to disagree with us, and we’ll shut down your government as punishment.
