Donald Trump is offering his two cents on the unprecedented battle for House Speaker.
In a series of Truth Social tweets, the former President urged Republican lawmakers to vote for Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) after he failed to secure the position through three rounds of voting.
“Some really good conversations took place last night, and it’s now time for all of our GREAT Republican House Members to VOTE FOR KEVIN,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“CLOSE THE DEAL, TAKE THE VICTORY, & WATCH CRAZY NANCY PELOSI FLY BACK HOME TO A VERY BROKEN CALIFORNIA,THE ONLY SPEAKER IN U.S. HISTORY TO HAVE LOST THE ‘HOUSE’ TWICE! REPUBLICANS, DO NOT TURN A GREAT TRIUMPH INTO A GIANT & EMBARRASSING DEFEAT. IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE, YOU DESERVE IT,” the 2024 presidential candidate continued.
“Kevin McCarthy will do a good job, and maybe even a GREAT JOB – JUST WATCH!” Trump predicted.
On Tuesday, the 118th Congress held three rounds of voting for House Speaker, but the California Republican fell short of crossing the 218 vote threshold as 19 Republican hardliners opted to support Rep. Jim Jordan(R-Ohio).
However, despite Trump’s attempts to sway favor back towards McCarthy, lawmakers say even Trump’s endorsement isn’t enough.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) who was among the 19 Republicans to oppose McCarthy, responded to Trump’s endorsement.
“Sad!” Gaetz said in a Wednesday statement. “This changes neither my view of McCarthy nor Trump nor my vote.”
Gaetz has been one of the most prominent figures to declare his opposition to McCarthy’s bid for Speaker and has worked to secure major concessions from the California Republican. However, negotiations have still fallen short and ultimately Rep. Gaetz nominated Rep. Jordan for Speaker during the first round of voting on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, the Florida firebrand also sent a letter to the Architect of the Capitol on Tuesday questioning why House Speaker candidate McCarthy was already inhabiting the Speaker’s office when he had yet to officially win the position, according to The Hill.
“I write to inform you that the Speaker of the House Office located in the U.S. Capitol Building is currently occupied by Rep. Kevin McCarthy,” Gaetz said in the letter.
“As of this morning, the 117th Congress adjourned sine die, and a Speaker from the 118th Congress has not been elected,” he continued. “After three undeciding votes, no member can lay claim to this office.”
Gaetz, you need to keep your mouth taped for a while. We, the people think you’re a big mouth troublemaker. All 19 or 20 of you are an embarrassment. We have a chance to peel back some of this unconstitutional, illegal crap that’s going on and you all make it look like we can’t govern!!
You guys wake up and get this taken care of and stop your non-sense. When President Trump says close the deal, do it and move on.
I agree entirely. Gaetz needs to stop acting like a spoiled brat and get onboard working on the numerous serious issues that need to be delt with.
I heartily agree with “CAR” and add that we [200+] need to negotiate with the far rights, give them some of what they want as well as commitment to work with them on the rest of their demands as long as they GET THE F**K OUT OF THE WAY. Let Kevin have his laurels and give Gaetz the permanent job as “hall monitor”.

I have seen enough of the RINO side of McCarthy to know he will not be a plus to the conservative movement. I think Jordan would be an excellent choice as he has demonstrated his conservative spine on several occasions.

I do not want the new speaker to back down from written standards for this (the agenda pushed by McCarthy). I liked Bobert and Gaetz, but what I am hearing now is changing my mind. Being “sassy” and bold are OK if you are otherwise in line with what is being asked for by voters. Bobert sounded like a democrat or some other unreasonable. She will not even say who this “right candidate” she wants is. She wants to talk past valid and direct questions. Republicans and conservatives do not want a “used car salesman” or a “carnival barker”, fast talker who does not seem to know what she and he, really wants. The situation here is flat out wrong. McCarthy has signed on to a clause that would allow the brash minority to force him to vacate his post if he does not comply with his written goals that the majority of House Reps helped him draft. They are left with no cover for their bad behavior. Their power grab is clear. That behavior in public, rather than in closed meetings, has me wish I had not supported them prior to today. Bobert sounds ungrateful for support. I’m hearing her say she did not get any support as if she did everything herself. Representatives: get moving. Get to the work you promised to do. It is very sad that Rep Matt Gaetz is vehementally opposing a candidate whom 200 of other votes agree upon. If Mr. Gaetz think that he can make the 200 support him. If he wanted to be the Speaker, he could have represented his case. For all these years I was voting in Florida, I have never heard a name like Matt Gaetz. I have heard of Mr. Mc Carthy for a long time. No candidate do anything for the Republican to win the race. I am a politically spirted person. For the first two elections, I never heard of any candidates for the state legislatures. I, probably I think, most persons vote for the party, and not the candidates who are only ‘surrogate candidates’ without any face. Mr. Gatez must see to it. You cannot bring a majority to support you just by your highhandedness. Democracy itself tells you to obey and respect the wishes of the majority. You can always try to influence the people to change their mind. I don’t support a name for the Speaker, but if you don’t believe, and go with the mind or opinion of the majority, I sadly, say:”It is high time for you to quit politics. I don’t know how you won. But I can assure you that you might not have won on your personal charisma.”

Maybe McCarthy should bail out for the good of the country. As far as I’m concerned, he’s the one screwing up the works. He’s been self-ordained as speaker. The fault I find is why was he allowed to continue in his role as minority leader when he was so terribly ineffective. Down deep I think he’s anti-Trump.
